After five years leading the development of Cortex, Grafana Labs is no longer contributing to this project. In March 2022, we launched Grafana Mimir, an open source long-term storage for Prometheus that lets you scale to 1 billion metrics and beyond. Grafana Labs’ Marco Pracucci (Cortex maintainer) and Red Hat’s Bartłomiej Płotka (Thanos co-author) join forces to talk about how the two potentially competing CNCF projects have built a tight collaboration over the years. Originally designed with totally different approaches to the same goal of scaling Prometheus, the two projects started to learn from and even influence each other – thanks to open source.
